Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Judicial Academy (KPJA) Peshawar set the trend by conducting two days’ conference on Women’s right to inheritance from 28-29 October for the first time in the academy. This conference was supported by the Strengthening Rule of Law Project (SRLP) UNDP with the financial assistance of Swiss Development Corporation (SDC).
Senior female Judicial Officers, Presidents of all Bar Associations of PATA and District Peshawar, Academia, senior officers of Provincial Government, representatives of local Government, Revenue officers from PATA, representatives of the organizations working for women’s rights and officials of SRLM (UNDP) attended the Conference.
Objectives of the conference were to create awareness on women’s right to inheritance, discussion on consciousness of women about their rights, privileges and immunities with particular reference to their right of inheritance, to sensitize the members of the civil society to the need and significance of the subject, to enhance the competence and capacity of judges as to prompt actions and proper implementation of the relevant laws, to discover the flaws of the laws on the subject, to explore the ways for its removal and further improvement and to build ethical standards in respect of women’s dignity, modesty, and concessions. In the last session the house was dissolved into three groups. Each group was assigned a topic relevant to the subject. All the three groups prepared and presented their recommendations to the house.
