KPJA Conducts Capacity-Building Training on Gender-Based Violence for Female Judges and Prosecutors (April 20, 0226)

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Judicial Academy (KPJA), in collaboration with Shirkat Gah – Women's Resource Centre and in partnership with UN Women, successfully conducted a one-day capacity-building training titled "Women Accessing & Delivering Justice in KP" at its premises in Peshawar.

The training, held on Monday, 20th April 2026, was specifically designed for female Judges and Prosecution Officers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, nominated by the Hon'ble Peshawar High Court. Twelve judicial officers participated from the districts of Peshawar, Kohat, and Swat, including Civil Judges-cum-Judicial Magistrates/Ilaqa Qazis, a Senior Civil Judge/Aala Ilaqa Qazis, and an Additional District & Sessions Judge/Izafi Zilla Qazi.

Mr. Jehanzeb Shinwari, Director General KPJA, chaired both the inaugural and concluding ceremonies and personally delivered key training sessions on Legal Frameworks and Judicial Obligations. He also distributed certificates among the participants at the end of the programme.

Training Sessions

Session 1 — Understanding Gender & GBV
Delivered by Dr. Anoosh Khan. Covered cultural context, anti-women practices, patriarchal norms, and the role of judges.

Session 2 — Legal Frameworks and Judicial Obligations
Chaired by DG KPJA Mr. Jehanzeb Shinwari. Encompassed Pakistan's GBV laws and international commitments including CEDAW and SDG 5.

Session 3 — Survivor-Centered and Trauma-Informed Justice
Facilitated by Ms. Faryal Zia Mufti, District & Sessions Judge/SDA KPJA. Focused on trauma responses and ethical courtroom practices.

Session 4 — Handling GBV Cases: Challenges and Good Practices
Also led by Ms. Faryal Zia Mufti. Addressed evidence challenges, witness protection, and successful case management practices.

The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of judges and prosecutors to effectively and sensitively adjudicate cases relating to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAW/G), in line with international standards and Pakistan's national legal framework, with a focus on promoting survivor-centered justice.

The programme included a pre-test and post-test to assess knowledge gains, group discussions, and practical recommendations for improving GBV case handling. Certificates of participation were awarded to all participants at the conclusion of the event.
